I actually have a friend who did just this in OK. You will obviously need legal council first. They will do the paperwork and arrange all of the necessary court dates, etc. The only drawback is that you will need the father's concent and signature on the pertinant papers. If you are releasing him from child support obligations you most likely will not have a problem, but if he decides that he wants to be suddenly involved he can resist the action and maintain his rights. In that case though, he will owe you support from the day of the childs birth up to now. He would be responsible for allllllll of the back support.
In either case it is a VERY smart thing to do, he may not be currently involved, but you need the legal papers that _say_ he has no rights whatsoever to protect yourself in the future should he change his mind. You are protecting your child legally and it is a very responsible thing for you to do. Good luck!

Check into the abandonment laws in your state. First ask for consent to adopt from the mother. It's possible that you can adopt on the grounds of abandonment if the parent, after a period of attempt to notify of your intention to adopt, does not respond or responds in a negative manner. For me it was only a 6 month period. This was a child from a previous relationship and the father had never been a father. My husband wanted to adopt him. Worked out well.
