That is ridiculous. I know that teachers don't necessarily have to let students go to the bathroom but seriously, he's a little kid. They haven't developed the tolerance to hold it like adults can. That teacher must not have very good skills with children

It definetely goes on everywhere. My kids race eachother to the bathroom after school ready to wet their pants. When I aske them why the held it and didn't go it school, they tell me that they weren't allowed to go. I mean I understand that there are probably kids who take advantage of bathroom time, but those situations should be dealt with individually. Good luck with your situation!

no teacher has the right to deny a child access to the restroom. tell your child that if he has to go to the bathroom he is to go.
when i was in school i had a teacher tell me that if i walked out the door i would not be allowed to return to class but would have to report to the office. everyone knows you are not supposed to hold it for long periods of time so i decided to take my books and leave. after using the bathroom i tried to return to class, the door was locked. i then walked to the office and my principal returned with me to class where my teacher was reprimanded in front of the class for not allowing me to use the bathroom and return to class. it never happened again at least in that class. later that year in another i had to threaten to pee on a teacher's desk before they would stop blocking me from the door.
empower your children to stand up for their rights as a person.

Maybe you don't know the full story. Don't always assume your perfect little angel is perfect. Teachers have reasons. I wonder what your son's gonna do in middle school and high school when he wants to pee. Teachers don't let students take potty breaks during class because it disrupts their teaching and the student doesn't get anything from class. Maybe your teacher has set times when she allows students to go to the bathroom. Your son needs to know to go before class even if he doesn't really feel the urge to go. Hey,you might lean that he was disrupting the class do she didnt allow him to go. And wow, that's a great lesson to teach him. You teach him how to respect teachers when you tell him to TELL them he's GOING to the bathroom(sarcasm).
Edit-I don't hate kids. I spend all of my free time with kids. I have 3 little brothers and 2 little sisters. I babysit for kids at my church. I spend time at the end of church playing with the little kids and lettin them color and play and watching hem so they don't get in trouble. I do not hate kids. I was speaking from the teacher's point of view(my mom,all three of my cousins, both aunts, and numerous other people I spend time wih are teachers).

I'm 15, and When I was in second grade the same thing happened to me. And I don't think its fair either. A lot of teachers think that they're going to the hall to mess around & stuff. Well you can take it to the principal of the school and if that doesn't work than set up an appointment with the super intendant. My dad always told me when they say no. Get up & just go then say if u have problems call my dad. Same situation happened and my parents were beyond mad. They finally contacted the super intendant and well with my dad being as mad as he was. It changed lol. he threatn to sue the school & then they bent the rules for not just me but other kids as well to use the restroom when needed.

Most people disagree but i think is completely horrible to not let a FIRST GRADER use the restroom. Obviously, he was not just saying that to leave class if it resulted in such an accident. I think it is much more appropriate for older students in middle school and such but a first grader?! You did the right thing by going straight to the school about this. Your son is there to learn and get an education and that is not going to happen if he is concerned and afraid that a similar situation could occur again. I am glad you told him to go right ahead and go next time he has to. Most parents would overlook something like this and blame the kid.
Good luck with this situation that never should have been a problem in the first place had the teacher let your very young son use the restroom.

I think setting a a bathroom time is ridiculous! I know I don't need the toilet at a fixed time each day. The teachers proberly think the children don't need the toilet and just want to mess around outside the classroom. I think they should send a classroom assistant out with them to make sure they go to the bathroom and back to the classroom.

It's legal, it happens everywhere. And that's one of the many reasons we homeschool.
All the best.

Listen I work for the school and if you want real action here is the way to tackle this, tell them "According to the united states government 'no child left behind' law a rule can not be in place that prohibits a child from receiveng the same education as other children" and because your child had to miss school and be picked up to change and it took him out of the classroom for an extended period it "infringed on his educational rights" and you will contact the "parents advocate" if this behavior by this teacher continues.

Wow! Your son never disrupts the class ever! So you think teachers should say yes to every student in first grade who asks to use the bathroom? I'm a teacher and I have said no to my students before, and haven't had any students who've had an accident. Did your son tell the teacher it was an emergency? Why didn't you speak with the teacher first to get her story also?

If you live in the us, the teacher can say no if she feels like someone is overusing bathroom passes or something. But if he has to go bad he can just get up and go. The school can't punish him for this unless the teacher has a two pass rule and then she can give him extra work or something on hid third use. But either tell him to go and say its an emergency
