Mam, it sounds like your son has HD(Hyper-activeness Disorder instead of ADD, and no mam, the drugs for ADD is not stimulants! They are a depressant,to calm the child down, and be able to cope; do not give your child any medications please; until you have him tested for ADD or HD, the doctor cas test especially for this, and you can also get him tested for allergeries, such as: dyes."MERRY CHRISTMAS"!Get him tested as soon as possible! Its better to know, than not to know!

First sounds like ADHD to me. Karate is one of the best things for a child with this because it teaches them control and self discipline, if the child was kicked out then there is a problem.

Most of the meds used to treat ADHD are in facts stimulants, Ritalin, Concerta, Adderall are all stimulants. Straterra is a non stimulant that is also used to treat ADHD, it is longer acting BUT takes a longer time to become effective.

My son now takes Vyvnase and it has been great. The best thing to do is make an appointment with the pediatrican and go from there.

The only way a child can take ADD drugs is if they were prescribed by a doctor. The only way they are prescribed by a doctor is if that doctor has diagnosed a child as having ADD or ADHD. Until there is a diagnosis he is simply an active 6 year old boy who isn't mature enough for that sort of instruction as yet. Some 6 year olds aren't.

Having extra energy does not necessarily mean your child has ADD. ADD is Attention Deficit Disorder. Being hyperactive and not being able to pay attention, to me, are very different things. I was hyperactive when I was in grade school, and I genuinely think that I would have turned out better if my parents had signed me up for a sports team or put me into dance.

My twin brother and I took gymnastics when we were little. We were your nephew's age, maybe a bit older. There was nothing better than being TOLD to run around, jump, and tumble on the ground. I definitely recommend it.

Well, if anything it is ADHD not ADD but this could easily be a child who is full of energy. If you want a diagnosis you need to see a doctor. But really, plenty of 6 year old boys act this way and certainly do not need to be drugged.

And yes, ADHD medications ARE stimulants because children who actually have ADHD have an unbalance of chemicals in their brain, this stimulatio evens them out. If you gave a child with true ADHD a cup of coffee it would calm him or her down too. It is counter intuitive but that is the way that it works.

Strattera is a non-stimulant ADD medication. My son uses it to control impulsivity. However, it sounds like your nephew may have the H part of ADHD (hyperactivity) - or he could just be a bored 6 year old :)
