Considering that the cost of raising a child in this day and age runs somewhere between $200,000 & $400,000 and children have 20 baby teeth. The cost of that first tooth should be somewhere around $10,000 - $20,000!

Of course, the tooth fairy isn't made of money so it might take them about 18 years to come up with this sort of funding. In the meantime, with timely monthly payments and some crude investing, inflation shouldn't affect the long terms costs too much.

As for a down payment due at the time the tooth is removed. I'd guess somewhere in the $1 range depending of course on the current financial situation. Just don't let them buy that chocolate bar with the money. Just remind them, "Ten years from now I can either buy you new teeth or a new car!" At six, they'll definately choose the chocolate over the car.

Whatever the tooth fairy decides to leave, make sure Mom gives them much more. :)

I always got a dollar, but when my daughter lost her first tooth in September, the tooth fairy didn't have change. So my daugter had gotten $5... It also seemed fair since she was so freaked out by losing a tooth... Now, she gets anywhere between 1-2 bucks depending on what the tooth fairy has in her wallet.

This may depend on the Tooth Fairy's income level. Some kids are lucky and get $5 a tooth, while others get $1 for a tooth.

The tooth fairy gave my 6-year-old son $5 when he lost his first tooth. And he has gotten $1 for each of the other teeth he has lost since.

I remember getting some change for my teeth, but it really depends on the tooth fairy's income. I give my kids $5 per tooth. That's the going rate in this neighborhood.

I think $5 dollars for the first tooth is sufficient enough.. When they are that young, they don't understand the value of money yet anyway. My 5 year old is really smart, and she still gets excited over a quarter! I'd do $1 or $2 dollars after that....

My daughter hasnt lost any teeth yet (she is only 2), but I have some ideas. I have always thought about getting $2 bills from the bank for teeth. That way it isnt money that is seen all the time, and seems a little bit more special. 50 cent or $1 coins would also be a little bit more unique.

My husband has a 10 year old. He has always given her $5.

well my son knocked both of his bottom front teeth loose and lost them both within a few days of each other and hes about to loose one of his front top teeth I ended up 5 dollars short for his first 2 since the tooth fairy waited a day to get both teeth at the same time so i would say about 2 dollars for one if you get more than one at a time no less than 5 dollars, but then again when I was a kid I used to get 50 cents in nickles

Wow. I got 25 cents if the toothfairy remembered. You should google tooth fairy and see the web sites of people that are really making a lot of money on this racket... There are toothfairy coins, pillows, boxes, tooth fairy clip art, letters from tooth fairies, tooth fairy certificates...

When my oldest lost her first tooth the gold dollars had just come out. So thats what I chose to give her per tooth and it has continued down to the rest of my kids.

My son lost his first tooth just a few months ago...The going rate these days is about 5 bucks! Can you believe it?! I was lucky to get a pack of gum and some spare change. :)

That's my wife's answer; she's crazy, it should have been a nickel and some dental floss.

A dollar slips under the pillow easily.

One fun idea: In addition to the dollar, sprinkle a little glitter under the pillow. It looks like fairy dust and makes everything special.

$1.....i always leave a dollar....and so do my daughters friends parents....it helps if it's the same amount as the children do talk amongst themselves...makes them believe in the tooth fairy more

$1, though I only got $0.25 growing up. But I once gave my oldest so $10 cuz I didn't have change & he woke up & said the tooth fairy didn't leave me any money (we forgot) so we said did you look good? so we all looked together & slipped the $10 inside the pillow case.

They never leave the same amount for each kid because then everyone would know what they're gonna get and tell all the other kids before they get a chance to get their money. It has to be random.

A quarter is good to start-a dollar is better! you can teach your child to save money in a piggy bank! That's what I did for my child.
2006-05-04 22:06:26 UTC
That depends on the parent...I have heard $5.00 from one parent...$1.00 from another parent. I can remember getting half-dollar coins for mine...
