Hi. I'm a first grade teacher, and I'm looking for more project ideas to use in my classroom. Specifically, I would like to find one or two more at-home projects the students could do with their parents. What fun, educational at-home projects have your childrens' teachers assigned? To get an idea of what I'm looking for, here are the ones I used last year:

-- Animal Skins project: Students cut a paper bag to look like an animal skin and write a story using pictographs.

-- Dressed for the Weather project: Students dress a paper doll for any type of weather they choose, mount it on a poster, and write about their choice.

-- State report: Students cut posterboard in the shape of a chosen state, then decorate it with facts/pictures telling about the state.

If you have any great ideas of projects your children enjoyed (or projects you enjoyed helping them with), please let me know.

Thanks!

Cute idea amazed!! Almost like a mini-play!

One thing that one of my sons did in 3rd grade was called "Flat Stanley". there is a book called Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown.

When Stanley Lambchop wakes up one morning, his brother, Arthur, is yelling. A bulletin board fell on Stanley during the night, and now he is only half an inch thick! Amazing things begin happening to him. Stanley gets rolled up, mailed, and flown like a kite. He even gets to help catch two dangerous art thieves. He may be flat, but he's a hero!

Have the kids draw themselves on big pieces of paper and make themselves into "Flat Joe" or "Flat Jessica" and then mail themselves to a relative or friend far away. Preferable in a different state or better yet country.

Have the "Flat Joe/Jessica" spend a week there and have the relative describe a bit about where they are, what they did, what they saw etc.

Have the kids explain about their "flat" person adventures.

Good luck and THANK YOU FOR BEING A TEACHER!!

I'm a kindergarten teacher and i let the kids make little projects, nothing to hard but cute and educational. I made one today. It's called the Name of your state project. Each student gets assigned a Town/ Or state that begins with the 1st letter of their name. For example, Alyssa is getting Alabama and so on.. My son who is 12 and in grade six got assigned a project on the Global effects on polar bears. He created a diagram, he took little polar bear statues and glued them to the bottom of a shoe box and colored them green and made an ocean out of green and blue tissue paper. It's really great.

Well they actually did it in 4th grade at school but maybe you could make a mini version of it:

So a parent asked a local bowling alley for some pins that they wern't going to use anymore and as far as I know they gave them free. They sanded them painted them and added yarn for hair, medals so they looked like a person from the past to make it mini just have them color it but see if you could still ask for the bowling pins. They also added glaze when done. And wrote a report about the person.

They also designed a water bottle about a book they read.
Maybe I'm Amazed

Brown Bag Book Report- on a large brown paper shopping bag, student writes the name of the book and its author and draws a scene from the story. Inside the bag, are props that the child uses to illustrate the story when he/she gives a brief description it.

My son is in 3rd grade and over the past week we had a Ancestor project. We had to find out the country of orgin, mode of travel to United States, languages spoken, traditions, ect. Then we made a doll out of cardboard and felt to represent one ancestor. It was really fun for both of us!!
